  When you buy a mobile broadband package you get a small USB receiver that looks a bit like a memory stick – often called a dongle which is a small modem. Distance from the nearest 3G mobile mast, plus additional factors like physical obstacles (such as dense tree growth) blocking the signal can all affect the actual broadband speed you’ll get.
  Even if you stood next to the mast, you wouldn’t be able to get the absolute maximum speed because of factors that limit speeds between the mast and the core network.
